Ukraine faces a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions

Most of the population is currently displaced, and the conflict has taken a heavy toll on those who have remained in their homes. The government-led war effort has been criticized by both internal opponents and international observers for its disproportionate use of force, which has led to civilian casualties.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that millions of people require immediate humanitarian assistance. This includes over 1.4 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, where the fighting has been especially hard hit.

In response to the crisis, the Ukrainian diaspora has raised millions of dollars worth of humanitarian aid. Through the Australian Ukrainian Humanitarian Fund, Australia has been supporting a range of relief activities throughout Ukraine. Australian humanitarian assistance has been provided through Mercy Corps International, Save the Children, and Action Against Hunger.

The United States has provided millions of dollars supporting the government’s efforts to address the humanitarian crisis. Some U.S. aid was provided directly to Ukraine, while other funds were provided to international organizations and NGOs to support humanitarian programs.

Kyiv has also issued an international appeal for assistance and has embarked upon a national campaign to engage ordinary Ukrainians to raise domestic funds. It saddens me to watch as the Ukrainian people have been trapped in conflict for more than a year. As the President said, It is people’s tragedy, our tragedy. We will always have it with us.

Through the United Nations, the international community should make all possible efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need within Ukraine. Ukrainian citizens across the globe should work together to raise funds for humankind in these trials and tribulations.

As we raise our voices against war, we must also speak with one voice for peace. As we support relief efforts for Ukraine, let us also pray for a new day to dawn for the people and their situation in Ukraine.
