How Gino Pozzo Transformed Watford FC Football Club
In 2013, Italian-born Gino Pozzo took over Watford Football Club and made it his mission to turn the side into one of the top English teams. Suffering from a lack of investment and little money, he set about changing things from the beginning. He targeted areas such as stadium management, ticketing, fitness, and sports medicine for improvement, intending to successfully build a world-class organization within five years.
Before the arrival of Gino Pozzo, Watford’s infrastructure lacked modern facilities and a state of adequate health/fitness. He ensured that all departments met the required standard within the set time. In turn, he also introduced several schemes in the club and made significant changes that would benefit the whole club, on and off-field.
Gino Pozzo aimed to improve performances and finances with an eye on growing the fanbase. Immediately after taking over, Gino Pozzo engaged Marco Marenghi, who had previously taken over Juventus’ academy. He was appointed as the General Manager of Watford FC, transforming the Football Club in several ways. Marenghi brought the Italian culture into the club by changing everything from training sessions to meal times. The players re-trained at a new integrated facility, were even introduced to nutritional science, and received vitamin injections.
Gino Pozzo’s first big success with his global vision was the international scouting network he established. Just six months ago, the club had only two scouts in the whole of Europe, but that figure has evolved to over 20 at present. Gino Pozzo has also prioritized the club to develop a loan system and promote young talent from within their own gates.
With this in mind, Marenghi set about replicating an academy within Vicarage Road and brought in an additional 25 trainees and five scholarship players. Pozzo’s vision for Watford FC has been a resounding success so far. Watford experienced their best start to a season in his first year as chairman.
